In 2007 German researchers compared the health effects of drinking black tea with or without milk. Results showed that drinking black tea significantly improved blood flow and blood vessel elasticity compared with water but the addition of milk completed blunted the heart health benefits. A type of protein found in milk decreased the amount of heart healthy compounds known as catechins that are found in tea that have cardio-protective effects. Perhaps this is why consumption of black tea has been found to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease in The Netherlands and in men and women in the USA but not in the UK where milk is customarily added to tea.

The most expensive coffee bean in the world is produced on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Called Kopi Luwak the price can run as high as $300 a pound. A luwak is actually a small civit-like mammal that lives in trees. One of their favorite foods is the red, ripe coffee cherry. The luwaks eat the cherries, bean and all. While in the luwak's stomach the bean ferments, finishes it journey through the digestive system then exits. The still intact beans are collected from the forest floor, clean then roasted and ground like other coffees. The resulting coffee has a rich, heavy flavor with hints of caramel and chocolate. The average annual total production is only around 500 pounds of beans.
