The Joy of Hex puzzles are the first collaboration between the Two Brass Monkeys and Derek Bosch. Together, they conducted an exhaustive and thorough analysis of all solid, twelve-piece burrs, without any solid key piece. From the thousands of possibilities, they selected and released three designs, which are being offerered in this set.
The set consists of three brass burrs consisting of 12 pieces each - packaged unassembled in beautiful book-style display boxes. Also included in the set are five bonus brass hex pieces and a manual of 30 configurations and solutions, written by Dr. Eric Shun. These published challenges were carefully curated as the thirty of the best designs from the 97,000+ possible assemblies.
About the three burrs:
Missionary
The first and easiest of the hex puzzles. A delightful introductory puzzle.
Bish, Bash, Bosch
A relatively simple selection of pieces, but not easy to assemble. This design is believed to be the first-ever coordinate motion construction.
Group
There are 9 possible types of notched hexagonal pieces. This design incorporates the maximum number of different piece types (8 out of 9) that have a single unique solution. It offers a significant step up in difficulty from Missionary and is not recommended for beginners.
About the puzzles:
Each hex piece is milled from solid brass and is 6cm / 2.36 inches long. An assembled puzzle weighs about 1.8lbs or 840g. These puzzles have a real heft to them - each weighing about the same as other signature Brass Monkey designs.
The puzzles have been tumble-finished to remove sharp edges and come in their natural unfinished form. They look wonderful if polished. From the second they are made, like other brass products, they will naturally tarnish, but can be cleaned and buffed to restore their appearance.
