The ancient Greek Olympics began in 776 BC and were designed to be a contest between all of Greece's city states to honor their gods as well as for neighboring city states to compete against each other peacefully. The most famous of these contests was held in Olympia to honor the Greek god, Zeus. The games were tests of skill and strength to measure each region's power, both physically and politically.
