Product Info

The Rubik’s ‘Professor’s Cube’ is the 5x5x5 version of the famous Rubik’s Cube. The Rubik’s 5x5 is not for the feint hearted and is the most complex of all the Rubik’s Cubes. However, knowledge of how to solve the 3x3x3 Cube and the 4x4x4 Cube will help you a lot.

The full number of permutations for the 5x5x5 cube has been calculated at 282 870 942 277 741 856 536 180 333 107 150 328 293 127 731 985 672 134 721 536 000 000 000 000 000. Which is about 283 duodecillion on the long scale or 283 trevigintillion on the short scale - (no - we had never heard of a these “illions” either!!)

Be sure the rows are correctly aligned before turning the Cube and never use excessive force. There are other ways to crack this puzzle!

"Newly tooled" is extremely good news! I bought one of these roughly two years ago, and it was so horribly stiff and uneven in torque (also unlubricated) that it was a disgrace to the good name of Rubik (It was a genuine Rubik, very likely). One would get RSI from attempting to solve it. Tooling was, well, essentially careless; it was possible to turn it, but that was all. When I complained to the vendor, they sent me a replacement that was just as bad. I did try to disassemble it; the center cubies were sealed (solvent, thermal, or ultrasonic welding?) so one couldn't get at the screws (no complaints about that). Without access to the screws, it couldn't be disassembled much. That one's mechanism had been elaborated somewhat, so it was very unlikely to start to come apart; it's likely, though, that this one has that same mechanism, properly engineered in detail. I have quite-high hopes! Please evaluate this one's appropriateness for speed cubing. If it qualifies, that's just great! If it's tiled, instead of having just stickers, that's even better. I rated it 4 because I haven't seen nor tried one out, yet.

The Rubik's 5x5 is a great puzzle, but without knowledge of the 3x3 and 4x4 it would be quite difficult. If you have already mastered the Rubik's cube and the Revenge I highly recommend taking a whack at this one.
